Melissa's Nerd World

Here I am at College. Life is great and crazy as you will notice. Its an exciting world here at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech). I'm currently a 2nd year Biomedical Engineering Major. This year 2 of my major roles, other than student, are a Resident Assistant and a Math Learning Center Coach. I figure this blog will provide a way to share some of my cool experiences with my friends and family. Here it goes...ready?

Broomball

Broomball is the biggest winter sport up here at Tech!
This here is my Broomball Team. Its 16 girls from my hall; our hall name is Shangri-la. Our Team name is the Wicked Wombats...don't ask, I wasn't there when they choose it. Our uniforms were these humungous yellow puffy vests. They were awesome because they added a little extra padding.

Here I am. I am # 14. I usually played Defense, but occasionally I played center as well. This is my usual game attire. spandex pants with smiley face boxers and my yellow vest.

I am on the side lines here waiting to sub -in. This sport is a lot like hockey: minus the skates, add a hand-made broomball stick (made from a broom and lotsa duct tape), and take away the puck and add a ball about the size of a cocanut.

This is one of my many many falls. The ice is just so slick. I have bruises everywhere. However, in the end its all worth it. Especially because I look so tough.
We ended up in a tie this game..it was pretty equal competition. Please notice the crowd in the background. Its usually twice as big as that. You see the guys tend to gather whenever girls play broomball because its one of the only times at tech you see 30 girls at once.
We have 2 games left in our season. Our record is currently 3-3-1.
Its been a great experience and a fun team.

Lovely vests! You could pass for the U.P. mascotts or bumble bees!
Looks like lots of fun though! Broom-ball is a blast!!

Lots of fun, Melissa! I'm in the mood for winter games with all our snow - a foot in Philly! So it's fun to see your sport.
